Sea Life Center say Goodbye with a Smile
11th Nov 2008
Guests staying in Scarborough hotels watched as staff at Scarborough Sea Life Center released four seal pups back into the wild after being nursed at the center.
The seals, which have been named: Bertha, Sheila, Arnold and Mabel were due to be released at Donna Nook, early this year.
“It’s definitely going to be a long day, but the reward is that we know the seals are well enough to survive in the wild and are going back where they belong, said aquarist Josh Saunders.
“Each pup was severely dehydrated and under-nourished when they were brought into the Seal Rescue Centre and weighed between nine and 12kgs. I’m glad to say now though, that they are at the ideal release weight of 30 kilos and stand a really great chance of surviving.”
Two young, rescued pups remain at the sanctuary. Evan and Brian – as they have been christened – are still to reach the ideal weight needed for their release.
