CLIFTON HOTEL GUESTS IN SCARBOROUGH TO VISIT SEA LIFE RESCUE CENTER

Sea Life Center Scarborough, Close to the Clifton Hotel

Guests at The Clifton Hotel in Scarborough can see staff at the new seal rescue center at Scarborough’s Sea Life Centre caring for the first casualty of the summer.
Mabel, a common seal pup who was found stranded near Bridlington lifeboat station, is the first of an expected influx after the breeding season.

When she was found there was no sign of her mother anywhere nearby. Sea Life marine expert Todd German told the Scarborough Evening News: “Volunteers from British Divers Marine Life Rescue collected her and brought her in.

“She was badly dehydrated and at just 9.5kg was also a little bit underweight. We’re also treating her for abscesses on her face, but I’m confident she will make a full recovery.”

Mabel, now at safely at the Sea Life Center in North Bay Scarborough, close to the Clifton Hotel Scarborough, is believed to be about five or six weeks old, was already weaned when rescued, but still needs to be fed every four hours round the clock.

Since the newly refurbished and expanded indoor seal hospital opened earlier this year seven grey seal pups have had brief spells in the facility but Mabel is the only patient. Mr German said: “I shouldn’t think she will be alone for long, though.”

It is hoped that Mabel will transfer outdoors to join the convalescing greys in a couple of months and will be able to return to the wild shortly afterwards.
