According to the UK’s Financial website of the year thisismoney.co.uk, major hotel chains are rushing to the seaside – with Budget hotel giant Travelodge even offering a £150,000 reward for tip-offs about new hotel sites.

It’s not surprising to see why either as, according to the article, the Office for National Statistics shows sales of British holidays up 15% in the first quarter of 2008 and one in three breaks in the UK being taken at the seaside.

Two of the UK’s leading hotel giants, Travelodge and Premier Inn, have already committed to building new hotels in Scarborough and with credit crunch Britain – including Gordon Brown and David Cameron – choosing to holiday at home, the UK’s first seaside resort is leading the comeback of the great British holiday.

This week Travelodge launched a Save Our Seasides campaign, backed by top industry players such as Merlin Entertainments’ Sea Life centres and National Express, in response to the growing demand for UK holidays, the same month as English Rose Hotels launched its own campaign ‘The Great British Holiday is Back’.

About 30% of British holidaymakers are expected to turn their backs on foreign holidays and investors believe the trend will continue. Helped by £45m makeover grants provided by the Government to spruce up seaside towns, resorts such as Scarborough looked destined to be the destination of choice for many family holidays over the next few years.
